Walmart.com is the second-biggest online marketplace in the U.S., and it has far fewer third-party sellers than Amazon. That gap is why so many resellers are adding Walmart. But you can't just sign up and list: Walmart Marketplace is application-only, and Walmart approves sellers it thinks will give shoppers a good experience. This guide walks through the whole process, from the documents you need to your first profitable sale.

Step 1: Check the Walmart seller requirements

Before you start the Walmart seller application, make sure you have these. Missing or mismatched paperwork is the number one reason applications stall.

Step 2: Fill out the Walmart seller application

Go to marketplace.walmart.com and click Join Marketplace. The application asks for:

  1. Your company details: legal name, EIN and address, exactly as they appear on your IRS letter.
  2. Your selling history: which marketplaces you sell on, your yearly online sales and a link to your store.
  3. Your catalog: what you plan to sell, how many items and your main categories.
  4. Fulfillment: whether you'll ship yourself or use WFS.

Most complete applications get a decision in 1 to 4 weeks. If Walmart asks for more information, answer quickly and upload clear documents; a name that doesn't match your EIN is the most common holdup.

Step 3: Set up your Walmart Seller Center account

Once you're approved, you'll log in to Walmart Seller Center, the dashboard for your Walmart seller account. Finish these before you list anything:

Step 4: Understand Walmart seller fees

Selling on Walmart has no monthly fee and no setup fee. You pay when you sell:

FeeWhat you pay
Referral feeA percentage of the total sale price, 15% in most categories (6% to 20% depending on category). See the full list.
WFS fulfillment feeOnly if Walmart ships for you; based on shipping weight. See the WFS fee chart.
WFS storageA monthly fee per cubic foot for inventory stored in Walmart's warehouses.
AdvertisingOptional. Only if you run Walmart Sponsored Search ads.

Example: you sell a $24.97 board game. The 15% referral fee is $3.75. If you use WFS, the fulfillment fee comes off too, and whatever you paid for the game. Our guide on how to calculate Walmart profit shows the full math.

Step 5: Find products to sell on Walmart

Most new sellers start with reselling: buying brand-name products for less and selling them on Walmart Marketplace. The three common ways are:

For every product, check four things before you buy: the price it sells for on Walmart.com, the fees, how many other sellers are on the listing, and how fast it sells. Walmart doesn't publish a sales rank, so use a sales estimator and watch competing sellers' stock.

Step 6: List your products

If the product already exists on Walmart.com, you match the existing listing by UPC and set your price, and you'll compete with other sellers for the Buy Box. If it's a new product, you create a full listing with a GS1 UPC, title, images and details. Start with 5 to 10 items so you can learn the system and keep your metrics clean.

Step 7: Keep your seller performance healthy

Walmart watches every seller's performance and can limit or suspend accounts that fall short. Its published targets include roughly 90% or more on-time deliveries, 99% valid tracking, a cancellation rate under 2%, a refund rate under 6%, and answering customer messages within 48 hours. Confirm the current numbers in Seller Center, because Walmart updates them.

Sellers who do well over time can earn the Walmart Pro Seller badge, which can help listings stand out.

Questions

Can anyone sell on Walmart Marketplace?

No. Walmart Marketplace is application-only. Walmart asks for a registered U.S. business with an EIN (a Social Security number is not accepted), a W-9, a U.S. address and bank account, and proof that you already sell online. Walmart also accepts some international businesses.

How long does Walmart seller approval take?

Most complete applications get a decision in about one to four weeks. Delays usually come from a business name or address that doesn't exactly match your EIN paperwork.

Does it cost money to sell on Walmart?

There is no setup fee and no monthly fee. Walmart takes a referral fee when an item sells, 15% in most categories and 6% to 20% overall, plus WFS fees if Walmart ships your orders.

Do I need my own products or UPCs to sell on Walmart?

No. Many sellers resell existing brand-name products by matching an existing Walmart listing. If you create a new listing, Walmart requires a GS1-issued GTIN (UPC) for it.

Is Walmart Seller Center the same as a seller account?

Walmart Seller Center is the dashboard you use after you are approved. It is where you list items, set prices, manage orders and see your payouts and performance.

What sells best on Walmart Marketplace?

Everyday products with steady demand do best: household, grocery, health and beauty, toys, pet supplies and home goods. Before you buy, check the price after fees, how many sellers compete and how often it sells.
