The exact formula for profit after Walmart's fees, plus ROI, margin, breakeven and the most you should pay, worked through on a real example.

Walmart profit is simple to write down and easy to get wrong. The formula is:
Profit = Sale price − Referral fee − WFS fulfillment fee − Storage − Your cost − Prep
Everything except your cost comes from Walmart's fee rules. Here's how to work out each part, then turn it into ROI, margin, breakeven and the most you should pay.
Look up the item's category in the Walmart referral fee table. Most are 15%. Multiply by the sale price (including any shipping you charge).
If Walmart ships for you, find the shipping weight (the greater of actual or dimensional weight, plus 0.25 lb, rounded up) and look up the fee. Add $1 if the item sells for under $10, and $0.50 for apparel or hazmat. If you ship it yourself, use your real label and packaging cost instead.
Cubic feet × $0.75 per month for most of the year. For small items this is pennies; for big or slow items, and for October–December, it adds up.
What you paid for the item, plus anything to get it ready: poly bags, labels, a prep center, and your inbound shipping per unit.
You find a board game you can buy for $10.00. It sells on Walmart for $24.97, weighs 1.2 lb in an 8 × 6 × 4 inch box, and you'll use WFS.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Sale price | $24.97 |
| Referral fee (15%) | −$3.75 |
| WFS fulfillment (2 lb) | −$4.95 |
| Storage (1 month) | −$0.08 |
| Your cost | −$10.00 |
| Profit | $6.19 |
| Metric | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ROI | Profit ÷ (cost + prep) | $6.19 ÷ $10.00 = 62% |
| Margin | Profit ÷ sale price | $6.19 ÷ $24.97 = 25% |
| Breakeven price | The sale price where profit hits $0 | About $17.68 |
| Max buy cost for 30% ROI | (Sale price − fees) ÷ 1.30 | $16.19 ÷ 1.30 = $12.45 |
ROI tells you how hard your money is working. Breakeven tells you how far the price can fall before you lose money, which matters when other sellers start cutting prices. Max buy cost is the number to know in the aisle: if the shelf price is above it, walk away.
You don't have to do this by hand. The free Walmart profit calculator does it for one item, and the Margenos Chrome extension does it automatically on every Walmart product page, with the sellers and Buy Box shown alongside.
Fee sources: Walmart Marketplace referral fees and WFS fees. Fees change; always confirm in Seller Center.
Profit equals the sale price minus the Walmart referral fee, minus WFS fulfillment and storage fees (or your own shipping cost), minus what you paid for the item and any prep costs.
ROI equals profit divided by your total cost for the item, including prep. For example, $6.19 profit on a $10 item is a 62% ROI.
Many resellers look for at least 30% ROI after all fees, but the right target depends on how fast the item sells and how many sellers compete for the Buy Box.
Subtract all Walmart fees from the sale price, then divide by 1 plus your target ROI. For a 30% target, divide by 1.30. If the price you'd pay is higher, pass on the item.
