How much can you make selling on Walmart? Nobody can honestly give you a number. What you make is profit per unit, after Walmart's fees and your costs, multiplied by how many units you actually sell, minus the stock that doesn't sell. Some resellers make a steady income, many make a little, and some lose money. This page shows how the math works with a clearly labeled example, what moves the result, and how to decide whether Walmart reselling is worth it for you. We make no income claims.

Margenos is a Walmart reseller tool (Chrome extension and Android app) that shows whether a product is worth selling on Walmart Marketplace: fees, profit, ROI, sales estimates, every competing seller with stock, the Buy Box winner and the product's price and Buy Box history. It shows the numbers; it doesn't promise results.

How Walmart reseller profit works

For each sale:

Profit = sale price − referral fee − fulfillment cost − storage − your item cost − inbound shipping and prep

Then ROI = profit ÷ (item cost + inbound shipping and prep), and margin = profit ÷ sale price. ROI tells you how hard your money works; margin tells you how much room you have if the price drops. Our step-by-step profit guide covers each term.

The fees are what new sellers underestimate:

Full tables are in Walmart seller fees and WFS fees.

Worked example (hypothetical)

This is an illustration with made-up prices, not a typical result. Say you buy a toy for $10.00 and it sells on Walmart for $24.97. It weighs 1.2 lb in an 8 × 6 × 4 inch box, which bills at a 2 lb WFS shipping weight. You assume $0.50 per unit to ship it into WFS, and it sits in storage for one spring month.

LineAmount
Sale price$24.97
Referral fee (Toys, 15%)−$3.75
WFS fulfillment (2 lb)−$4.95
Storage (0.11 cu ft × $0.75)−$0.08
Item cost−$10.00
Inbound shipping (assumed)−$0.50
Profit per unit$5.69
ROI ($5.69 ÷ $10.50)54%
Margin ($5.69 ÷ $24.97)23%

That looks healthy, but watch how fast it changes:

What affects how much you make on Walmart

Sales volume

Profit per unit only matters if units sell. Walmart has no public sales rank, so demand is harder to judge than on Amazon. Margenos estimates monthly sales from Walmart's own signals and labels the source, or says "not enough data." See the Walmart sales estimator for how that works.

Competition and the Buy Box

You share a listing's sales with every other seller on it. If five sellers split a product, you won't get all its sales, and you won't get many if you rarely win the Buy Box. Price wars also cut the per-unit profit for everyone.

Sourcing

Your buy cost decides your margin. Retail clearance, online arbitrage and wholesale each trade off price, effort and repeatability.

Capital and turnover

Money tied up in stock that hasn't sold can't buy new stock. A 30% ROI that turns over in a month is very different from a 60% ROI that takes six months to sell through.

Mistakes

Wrong listing matches, gated brands, prep errors (WFS charges $0.65 a unit for a wrong label) and overbuying are where many new sellers lose money.

Is selling on Walmart profitable?

It can be, item by item, for sellers who check the numbers before buying. Walmart charges no monthly fee, and listings often have fewer sellers than the same product on Amazon, which helps. Against that, Walmart's seller application is selective, approval categories limit what you can sell, and there's less public demand data. See Walmart vs Amazon for the full comparison.

Is Walmart reselling worth it for you?

Ask yourself:

If yes, start small: a few units of several products, then reorder what sells. Track your actual profit per unit, not what the deal looked like at checkout. To check a product in seconds, open the listing with the Margenos Chrome extension or scan the barcode with the Android scanner app.

Questions

How much can I make on Walmart Marketplace?

There's no typical amount. Your earnings are profit per unit after Walmart's fees and your costs, times the units you sell, minus losses on stock that doesn't sell or gets returned. Work it out product by product.

Is selling on Walmart profitable?

It can be for sellers who check fees, sales speed and competition before buying. Walmart charges no monthly fee and often has fewer sellers per listing than Amazon, but referral fees (15% in most categories), WFS fees and returns can erase thin margins.

What is a good profit margin on Walmart?

There's no official benchmark. Many resellers look for enough margin to survive a price drop and the occasional return, and an ROI that justifies the money tied up. Decide your own minimums and check every product against them.

Is Walmart reselling worth it?

It's worth it if you can get approved, have capital you can afford to tie up, and will check the numbers on every product. It's not passive income; sourcing, prep and listing management take regular time.

How much does Walmart take from each sale?

A referral fee by category, 15% in most categories, plus WFS fulfillment and storage fees if Walmart ships for you. There's no setup or monthly fee.

How do I know if a product will make money on Walmart?

Subtract the referral fee, fulfillment, storage and your full cost from the sale price, then check how fast it sells and how many sellers compete. Margenos shows all of that on any Walmart listing.
