What Walmart gates, what it bans, what brand owners can do, and how to check before you spend money on inventory.

Walmart restricted brands and categories are products you can't list on Walmart Marketplace until Walmart approves you, or can't list at all. Walmart's policy names the pre-approval categories: books, ingestible products, topical products, Class II or restricted medical devices, fragrances, luxury brands, software, Halloween and select seasonal products, custom content, and jewelry, watches, precious metals and similar covered goods. Walmart doesn't publish a public list of individual restricted brands, so the safe habit is to test-list or confirm in Seller Center before you buy.
Margenos is a Walmart reseller tool (Chrome extension and Android app) that shows whether a product is worth selling on Walmart Marketplace: fees, profit, ROI, sales estimates, every competing seller with stock, the Buy Box winner and the product's price and Buy Box history. It doesn't tell you whether your account is approved for a brand; Seller Center does that.
Walmart's prohibited products policy says items in these categories require pre-approval from Walmart before you can offer them for sale:
| Needs pre-approval | Notes |
|---|---|
| Books | Pre-approval required |
| Ingestible products | Food, supplements and similar; select OTC drug and supplement product types are prohibited outright |
| Topical products | Applied to skin or hair; personal care and beauty have extra rules |
| Class II or restricted medical devices | Select medical device product types are prohibited |
| Fragrances | Pre-approval required |
| Luxury brands | Pre-approval required |
| Software | Pre-approval required |
| Halloween and select seasonal products | Pre-approval required |
| Custom content | Pre-approval required |
| Jewelry, watches, gemstones, coins, currency and precious metals | Subject to Walmart's FinCEN Covered Goods Policy |
The same policy lists select product types in OTC drugs, dietary supplements, medical devices, personal care and beauty, pet and baby as prohibited. In July 2025, trade press reported that Walmart moved to limit beauty and personal care listings to brand owners and authorized distributors, with other sellers needing extra documentation to stay listed. If you resell beauty, expect to prove where your stock came from.
Walmart uses these words in specific ways:
If you break a category's requirements, Walmart says it will automatically unpublish the item, and repeated problems can lead to account suspension or termination.
Beyond categories, brands themselves can be a problem. Walmart's policy says you must own the items you sell and have the licensing rights to sell any branded products. Here's how that plays out for resellers:
Receipts from a retail store or website prove you bought the item legitimately, but they don't make you an authorized reseller. Some brands actively file claims against unauthorized sellers, so a brand that looks open today can still cost you listings later.
Walmart doesn't publish a step-by-step ungating process on its policy pages, and the details can change. In general:
If you're still applying for an account, start with how to open a Walmart seller account, then work through Seller Center once you're in.
The cheapest restriction check is the one you do before checkout. On every sourcing run:
Then check the money. Margenos shows the fees, profit, ROI and sales estimate so you only fight for approval on products worth selling. If you're sourcing online, read online arbitrage on Walmart for the shipping and sourcing rules that go with restrictions.
