Supplier, drop ship vendor, Marketplace seller or Open Call: what each route means and how to apply.
Updated November 1, 2026 · By the Margenos team
How do you get your product into Walmart? There are four main routes: become a Walmart supplier that sells wholesale to Walmart for its stores or Walmart.com (you start by registering through Retail Link), become a drop ship vendor for Walmart.com (by invitation from a Walmart.com buyer), sell it yourself as a Walmart Marketplace seller (apply at seller.walmart.com), or pitch it at Walmart's Open Call if it's made, grown or assembled in the U.S. Marketplace is the fastest to start; a supplier deal puts you on store shelves but takes the longest.
Margenos is a Walmart reseller tool (Chrome extension and Android app) that shows whether a product is worth selling on Walmart Marketplace: fees, profit, ROI, sales estimates, every competing seller with stock, the Buy Box winner and the product's price and Buy Box history. For brand owners, that's a quick way to size up the competition and pricing on Walmart.com before you pick a route. Margenos isn't affiliated with Walmart and can't get you a supplier deal.
| Route | Who sells to the shopper | Who holds inventory | How you get in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walmart supplier (stores, clubs or online) | Walmart | Walmart buys your product wholesale | Register via Retail Link; a Walmart merchant must offer an agreement |
| Drop ship vendor (DSV) | Walmart (Walmart.com) | You, shipping direct to customers | Invitation from a Walmart.com category specialist (buyer) |
| Marketplace seller | You, as a third-party seller | You, or Walmart via WFS | Apply at seller.walmart.com |
| Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) | You (it's an add-on for Marketplace sellers) | Walmart's fulfillment centers | Enroll from your Marketplace account |
| Open Call | Depends on the deal | Depends on the deal | Apply through RangeMe during the application window; U.S.-made products only |
This is the classic "get your product in Walmart" path: Walmart buys from you at wholesale and sells it in stores, Sam's Club or on Walmart.com as its own item. Walmart's apply page says U.S. businesses that want to sell in stores or online must complete its application process. The steps it lists:
Walmart's supplier requirements page lists what you'll need to have in place:
Be realistic about what registration does. Walmart says that self-registering "does not guarantee you will be extended an agreement to do business." A Walmart merchant (buyer) still has to want your product. Existing suppliers use Supplier One for tools and resources; it isn't a sign-up route for new suppliers. If you want to manufacture Walmart's own brands, you indicate that during the same registration.
Walmart also runs Walmart Start, a program for emerging beauty brands, listed on its supplier page.
As a DSV, Walmart lists and sells your product on Walmart.com, and you ship orders directly to customers (or stores). Walmart's Supplier One help docs say you must be invited by a Walmart.com category specialist (buyer), and that the program is aimed at high-volume suppliers. You don't simply sign up, though you'd still go through the supplier qualification process.
The appeal: Walmart owns the listing and the price, and you avoid sending inventory to Walmart warehouses. The catch: you need the buyer's invitation and the systems to handle Walmart's order and shipping requirements.
For most small brands, Marketplace is the quickest way onto Walmart.com. You're the seller: you set the price, own the listing content, and pay Walmart a referral fee when it sells. Walmart says there are no setup, monthly or hidden fees. Most categories have a 15% referral fee, with lower or tiered rates in some; see Walmart seller fees.
Walmart lists these minimum requirements to apply:
Apply at seller.walmart.com. Our guide to opening a Walmart seller account walks through the application, and how to sell on Walmart covers what happens after approval.
Protect your brand. If you own a USPTO-registered trademark, Walmart's Brand Portal lets you file IP claims and name authorized resellers. That matters once other sellers start listing your product. See Walmart restricted brands for how brand rights work on Marketplace.
WFS isn't a separate way in; it's how Marketplace sellers can have Walmart store, pick, pack and ship their orders. You stay the seller of record, and Walmart charges fulfillment and storage fees on top of the referral fee. It can help if you don't have your own U.S. warehouse with returns. Costs are on Walmart WFS fees, and WFS vs FBA compares it with Amazon's program.
Yes. Open Call is Walmart's sourcing event for products made, grown or assembled in the United States, where entrepreneurs pitch directly to Walmart and Sam's Club merchants. Open Call 2026 took place on October 7, 2026, at Walmart's Home Office in Bentonville, Arkansas, in person only.
We didn't find details for a 2027 event when we checked in November 2026. Watch Walmart's Annual Open Call page for the next application window.
Many brands start on Marketplace. Sales history on Walmart.com is useful evidence when you later talk to a buyer, though Walmart doesn't promise that path.
Whatever route you choose, look at what's already selling. Search Walmart.com for products like yours and open the listings. With Margenos on a listing you can see:
If competing products sell steadily at a price that leaves you a margin after Walmart's fees, that's a reason to move forward. If the category is crowded with cheaper look-alikes or Walmart's own brand, rethink your price or positioning. For a structured way to judge demand, see how to know if a product will sell on Walmart.

Register as a supplier through Walmart's apply page and Retail Link, meet its supplier requirements (GS1 prefix, insurance, tax ID, D&B registration), and win interest from a Walmart merchant. Open Call is another route for U.S.-made products.
You can apply to sell it yourself on Walmart Marketplace at seller.walmart.com, or sell it to Walmart as a supplier or drop ship vendor so Walmart lists it on Walmart.com. DSV requires an invitation from a Walmart.com buyer.
Walmart's apply page doesn't list an application fee, but you need a GS1 Company Prefix, which GS1 charges for, and the insurance Walmart requires. Marketplace has no setup or monthly fees; you pay a referral fee per sale.

A supplier sells to Walmart at wholesale and Walmart sells to shoppers. A Marketplace seller sells directly to shoppers on Walmart.com, sets the price and pays Walmart a referral fee on each sale.
A DSV is a supplier whose products Walmart sells on Walmart.com while the supplier ships orders directly to customers. Walmart says you must be invited by a Walmart.com category specialist.
