Yes, Walmart has third-party sellers. A large share of the products on Walmart.com are sold by independent businesses through Walmart Marketplace, not by Walmart itself. Most of them are legit: every seller has to apply and be approved, Walmart tracks their performance, and Walmart's return policy covers Marketplace orders. But the quality varies from seller to seller, so it's worth checking who you're buying from. Here's how to tell, what protects you, and why it matters if you resell.

Does Walmart have third-party sellers?

It does, and it has for a long time. Walmart's online marketplace launched in 2009 and lets outside businesses list products on Walmart.com next to Walmart's own inventory. Walmart allows third-party sellers because they add millions of products it doesn't have to buy or store, and Walmart earns a referral fee on each sale. How to tell if a Walmart seller is third-party

Look near the price and "Add to cart" button on the product page:

Click the seller's name to see their seller page, rating and reviews.

Are Walmart third-party sellers legit?

Most are real businesses, and Walmart filters them harder than many marketplaces:

That said, "approved" isn't the same as "perfect." Counterfeits and slow shippers do show up on every big marketplace.

Buyer protection on Walmart Marketplace orders

Walmart's Marketplace returns policy, published in its seller guides, gives shoppers real protection:

If a seller doesn't respond, contact Walmart Customer Care through the order in your Walmart.com account.

How many sellers are on Walmart Marketplace?

Walmart rarely publishes the number. Marketplace Pulse reported about 150,000 active sellers in September 2024, up from around 50,000 as recently as 2022, with roughly 35% based outside the U.S., nearly all in China. For comparison, Amazon has far more sellers, which is part of why Walmart listings often have less competition.

Are Walmart sellers reliable compared with Amazon sellers?

Both marketplaces have great sellers and bad ones. The main difference is the front door: Walmart approves each seller by application, while Amazon lets most sellers sign up and starts screening from there. Walmart also has far fewer sellers overall. Neither fact guarantees a good order, so the same habits apply on both sites: check the seller, check the reviews, and know the return policy before you buy. See Walmart vs Amazon for the seller-side differences.

Why third-party sellers matter if you resell

If you're a reseller, the shopper's question flips around. You're the third-party seller, and the other third-party sellers on a listing are your competition. Before you buy inventory, you want to know:

Walmart.com shows some of this, one click at a time. Margenos shows it all on the product page: every competing seller with stock counts, total stock across sellers, WFS vs seller-fulfilled for each offer, who wins the Buy Box, and price and Buy Box history from daily snapshots, next to your profit after fees. Use the Walmart seller lookup to dig into a listing's sellers, or the stock checker to see how much inventory is out there.
